Indianhead Sheep Breeders Association 14th Annual Shepherd's Clinic and Trade Show Sets New Attendance Record!
The Indianhead Sheep Breeders Association presented the 14th Annual Shepherd’s Clinic and Trade Show on Saturday, February 9th at the Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College Conference Center in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. A capacity crowd of over 200 attended the all-day event. The 2008 event included a wide variety of concurrent educational topics by nationally recognized sheep industry speakers including Dr. Fred Provenza of Utah State University, Robert Padula of ASI and the American Wool Council, Dr. Susan McClanahan of the University of Minnesota, Dr. Dave Thomas of the University of Wisconsin, Randy Gottfredson, formerly of the University of Wisconsin, Mary Falk of LoveTree Farmstead Cheese, Dan Leiterman of Crystal Creek, Inc., and Kevin Christenson of AgStar Financial Services. A trade show including free catalogs and information, as well as booths with USDA representatives, sheep producers, nutrition services, feed dealers and sheep equipment manufacturers was also featured. Alecia Treml of Dream Acres Club Lambs, Marlin Subra of Subra Suffolks, and Wisconsin State Fair Junior Sheep Show Superintendant Bill Keough presented a morning youth session focusing on 4-H and FFA sheep projects including demonstrations and instruction using live sheep. An afternoon wool workshop for the youth was presented by Heather Landin, sheep producer and hand spinner of fine wools of CedarFen Farm. A roast lamb and chicken luncheon program featured an address by Wisconsin’s Alice in Dairyland, Jill Makovic; presentation of the association Extra Mile Award to Rudy Erickson of Wilson, Wisconsin; and presentation of the Friend of the Association Award to Herdsman Feeds Inc. of Connorsville, Wisconsin. A Post-secondary scholarship in the amount of $500 was presented to Wrayannne Hersha of Dafter, Michigan. ISBA Board of Directors elections were held with two vacancies. Corinne Arnevik-Hansen of Cameron, Wisconsin and Kara Berlage of Hayward, Wisconsin were elected to the board. The luncheon program concluded with a live auction of donated products including a years supply of organic milk from Organic Valley Family of Farms, a team-autographed football from the Green Bay Packers, Winter Jackets from Kent Feeds, a lamb tapestry throw blanket from Ewephoric Gifts, a wood wall plaque from Ewesful gifts, a 3 course dinner for two at Native Bay Restaurant and Lounge on Lake Wisota, national award winning Dante sheep milk cheese, and selection of a lamb for the Wisconsin State Fair Performance Lamb Class from Dittbrenner Farms/Mint Gold Ranch. In addition, a silent auction of approximately 50 items was conducted during the day.
